Prayers for Izzy

posted on

We invite you to pray with us for Landon and Allyson Powell, whose five month old daughter Izzy went to be with her Creator this weekend. The family has organized a memorial service for Wednesday, January 30 at Grace Church, 101 W. McBee Avenue in downtown Greenville, South Carolina. The family will be receiving friends and family at 5pm, and the ceremony will start at 6pm.

Izzy struggled with several serious health issues from birth. Her parents nicknamed her their “warrior princess” because of the fight that she put up. The Powell’s have shown tremendous faith through this experience. On the Prayers for Izzy Facebook page Landon writes, “My prayer tonight is, that it doesn’t always take a story like Izzy’s to remind us how important our Faith is. That we can all live our lives daily, according to God’s will. That we can turn our hearts over to Christ, and let him use us in a way that will glorify Him! Just like he did with Izzy. He took her broken body, and used it to Glorify Him in a way none could have expected. And as hard as it is for a dad to say, ‘God, I am thankful!'”

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any gifts made in Izzy’s honor be made in the form of a donation to Donate Life South Carolina. It’s a charity the family has worked closely with and even little Izzy herself was an organ donor, giving a heart valve and cartilage. Donations can be sent to P.O. Box 27263, Greenville, SC 29616. If you’d like to learn more about Landon Powell’s testimony you can read about it in God’s Lineup: Testimonies of Major League Baseball Players by Liz and Kevin Morrisey.

Crossing ValuesFor years, Amber traipsed around the Northwest avoiding the skeletons in her closet. Job-hopping every few weeks, she refused to let anyone get close to her as she slowly made her way east. As winter plants itself firmly across the Rockies, she decides to take a chance on a job at a logging company with a family different from any she’s ever known before. Watching the family interact creates more questions than answers for Amber. Feeling like she’s entered the happily-ever-after written at the end of a fairytale, she watches for cracks in the facade. Surely as the days pass, the play-acting will cease and the real family will emerge. Or could she be wrong? Could they truly be genuine? Could Faye understand the trauma from her past or Peter think of her as more than just the winter office help? Could this family really hold the key to what she’s seeking?

And all part of “normal.” But her mother’s unpredictable spells of arguing with imaginary tormentors, a Norwegian heirloom table subjected to countless layers of paint during such fits, and her father’s refusal to seek help for his unstable wife—these too are “normal.” Saffee meets the wide-open world with these secrets stowed away, and she plans to keep things that way. New Book Reveals Christian Testimonies of Major League Baseball Players

Gods-Lineup Twenty-five players share their faith stories, many for first time

For immediate release: More than two dozen baseball players are opening up in a new book about something other than batting averages and pitching records. They’re sharing intimate details about their Christian faith. Twenty-five current and retired Major League players agreed to tell their faith stories for the new book God’s Lineup: Testimonies of Major League Baseball Players. “Many of these players have never shared their faith in such an open, honest way before,” says co-author Kevin Morrisey. “But when we approached them about the idea they were thrilled to be a part of this book.”

Morrisey says he was struck with the idea for the book while at St. Louis Cardinals game a couple of years ago. “It was Faith Night at the park and several of the players were sharing their testimonies,” Morrisey remembers. “I just thought it would be great if I could interview more players about their testimonies.” Some of the players featured in the book include:

  • Stephen Drew, current shortstop for the Arizona Diamondbacks.
  • Trot Nixon, former outfielder for the Boston Red Sox and 2004 World Series Champion.
  • Matt Diaz, current outfielder for the Atlanta Braves.
  • Tim Salmon, former right fielder and designated hitter for the Los Angeles Angels, known among Angels’ fans as the King Fish.

The book received a rare endorsement from Baseball Chapel, an international ministry responsible for the appointment and oversight of all team chapel leaders. Each chapter focuses on one ball player and tells the story about how their life was before knowing Christ, how they came to know Him and how their life has changed. Morrisey spent more than a year interviewing players and says he was incredibly encouraged by their stories. “The players repeatedly told me that playing ball was a gift from God to place them on a platform for sharing Jesus,” says Morrisey.
