Book’s Release Coincides with Children’s Dental Health Month

For immediate release: Tooth decay is the most common and most preventable disease in children, according to the Academy of General Dentistry. February is Children’s Dental Health Month. In an effort to promote children’s oral health routines within international households and families, authors Ashley Grisham and Gary Kersey Jr. announce the release of their children’s book Everyone Smiles (Ambassador International; February 2015; $14.99, hardcover).

Using beautiful9781620205105 photography of children from a diverse range of backgrounds and cool- catchy-rhymes, Everyone Smiles is a fun, interactive and educational book. An avid volunteer with organizations providing free dental services to impoverished families, Gary says he has seen firsthand the importance of educating children about the necessity of brushing and flossing. “It can be a frustrating task for parents,” admits Gary, “but we hope this book will be a tool that can make these critical lessons easy for kids to learn.”

One in seven children between the ages of 6-19 has an untreated dental cavity, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. For children of poverty the statistics are even worse with one in four between the ages of 3-5 and 6-9 having an untreated cavity, according to the CDC. Here are some other interesting dental care statistics:

  • Americans spent $106 billion on dental care in 2010, according to Pew Center study.
  • 108 million children and adults lack dental insurance, according to a Surgeon General’s report.
  • Only 48% of children entering kindergarten have seen a dentist within the past year, says the CDC.
  • Tooth decay is five times more common than asthma.

Everyone Smiles features children from diverse backgrounds, which was key for Ashley, the daughter of a dentist and dental hygienist. “A smile can break through so many cultural and language barriers,” says Ashley. “Being confident of your smile can lead to confidence in other areas of life.” The co-authors’ platform, the Kersey Kids Club, focuses on supporting health educational resources for young children and families and the power of a  smile.

About the Authors: Born and raised in North Carolina, Gary Kersey earned his undergraduate degree with honors from Morehouse College. He continued his education by working towards a Masters degree in Physiology & Biophysics from Georgetown University. Gary is an aspiring dental professional hoping to combine his background in the sciences and modern languages to elevate dental care in underserved areas.

Ashley Grisham, a native of San Diego, CA, grew up as the daughter of both a U.S. Navy Captain dentist and a dental hygienist. A graduate of Spelman College, Grisham earned her Bachelor of Arts in International Studies and holds a minor in Chinese language. Ashley is currently finishing her last year at Georgetown law school and upon graduation will join the law firm of Paul Hastings LLP.

Author David Sitton Shares Story of Missionary Mentor Joe Cannon

For immediate release: Joe Cannon devoted nearly 65 years of his life sharing the Gospel across some of the toughest terrain, to the most unloved, unreached people in the world. Cannon’s efforts have inspired countless others including author and missionary David Sitton. In Hard Fighting Soldier: Joe Cannon: 65 Years of Pioneer Gospel Exploits for the Glory of God (Ambassador International; January 2015; $13.99, paperback) author David Sitton inspires and encourages readers through the incredible story of his missionary mentor.

Hard Fighting SoldierCannon did not shy away from sharing the Gospel to even the most challenging peoples. He invested into lives throughout Japan, Okinawa, Papua New Guinea and Ukraine, often utilizing unconventional methods that earned him a reputation as a courageous fireball. “The gospel doesn’t carry itself along its own merry way,” writes Sitton. “When it runs, it runs on our legs. God’s messengers are called upon to forcefully accelerate the gospel into hazardous situations, and front line soldiers for Christ are guaranteed to be busted up and bloodied in the fight.” Joe Cannon and his wife exchanged leisure, physical safety and financial security for the advancement of Christ.

Hard Fighting Soldier begins with Cannon’s first missionary assignment, which carried him to Japan in the wake of World War II. Answering an urgent request for the deployment of 1,000 missionaries to help fill the “spiritual vacuum” created by the devastation of war, Cannon and his new wife traveled thousands of miles to work with the poorest cave dwellers they could find. Over the years Cannon utilized a wide variety of ministries and methods to share the Gospel including Christian kindergartens, orphanages, retirement homes, sewing and English language schools, radio preaching, youth camps and more. Despite exposure to plagues, disease and death the couple’s unshakeable trust in God and resolute ambition to advance the Gospel never wavered. “Joe’s rallying call for pioneer spearheads to boldly go into all the world and preach the gospel was exhilarating,” recounts Sitton. “Thousands were roused by that challenge, and hundreds have found their way to missionary frontlines because of his influence.”

About the Author: In January, 2006 Sitton and his wife Tommi  founded their second ministry, The Center for Pioneer Church Planting which is dedicated to recruiting, training and launching pioneer church planters into the far-flung regions where Christ is still unknown. Hard Fighting Soldier is Sitton’s third book, following the popular title, Reckless Abandon: A Gospel Pioneer’s Exploits Among the Most Difficult to Reach People’s.

Despite Devastating Loss, Young Girl Resolves to Let Hope and Love Prevail

The River KeeperFor immediate release: Witnessing her family die in a flood could have been enough to ruin Callie Mae McCauley, but she doesn’t let being orphaned at the age of eight destroy her tender spirit. The River Keeper (Ambassador International; October 2014; $14.99, paperback) follows young Callie as she navigates the stream of life. Through gentle ripples and vengeful rapids, she finds healing living with her grandmother in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Set along the banks of the New River in North Carolina in the 1940s, author Sarah Martin Byrd artfully writes about the rugged hillsides and idyllic meadows with familiarity that can only come from someone who has called this place home. Believed to be one of the oldest rivers in North America, the author has woven its natural history into the story of The River Keeper. “I have probably done more research on this one story than I’ve done on all my others,” explains Sarah, who has fished, swam and paddled through miles of the river. “The New River is so rich in history and folklore.”

Based on actual events, The River Keeper tells the story of the 13-year battle to protect the New River from development. In 1965 Appalachian Power filed an application with the Federal Power Commission for permission to build a two-dam hydroelectric and pumped-storage facility. This project would have flooded over forty thousand acres of rich bottomland, displacing as many as 3,000 people, destroying hundreds of cabins, churches and cemeteries and one of the most important archeological areas in the eastern United States.

The River Keeper is Byrd’s third project with Ambassador International. In 2012 Ambassador International published Byrd’s novel The Color of My Heart, which pushes readers to contemplate whether they believe heart matters more than skin. In 2013 Byrd released The Manger Mouse, a touching children’s book about a tiny mouse’s big role in the Christmas story.

About the Author: Sarah Martin Byrd is a graduate of The Institute of Children’s Literature. She is a published novelist, newspaper columnist, blogger, and former Advertising Manager for a regional newspaper. Sarah loves sharing her life story with children of all ages. She speaks at schools, book clubs, libraries and book festivals. Sarah lives at the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in North Carolina with her husband of 38 years. Her only daughter and grandchild live close by. When not creating new stories she loves camping, canoeing, fishing, her daily walks, and spending time with her family.

AUTHOR’S POEM AND CLAY FIGURINES BECOME A HEARTFELT CHILDREN’S STORY

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: A few days after Christmas and ten years ago, Ronni Scott spent her devotional time reading Matthew 1 and Luke 2 and wished for more information about Joseph and Mary’s journey to Bethlehem. She desired more intimate details of the Christmas story and prayerfully asked God questions and was struck with A Donkey's Little Taleinspiration. At the end of three hours she wrote a poem etched with pencil in a spiral notebook that would become the manuscript for A Donkey’s Little Tale (Ambassador International; October 2014; $17.99, hardcover). Now ten years after that December morning Ronni is sharing her prized story with the world.
As she studied, Scott realized there was another figure that accompanied Mary and Joseph on their journey — a donkey! “The child in me took over,” recounts Scott. “I began to imagine what that donkey saw, felt and heard.” A Donkey’s Little Tale begins with Mary and Joseph’s difficult trek to Bethlehem, chronicling their stay at the stable and ending with the glorious arrival of baby Jesus.
In addition to writing A Donkey’s Little Tale, Scott also played an integral part in the illustrations. Using her beloved Georgia Lizella clay, Scott sculpted each scene of the book. The sculptures were then translated into sketches and illustrations by Brittany Huskey.  Scott is still working through a 300 pound supply of clay, mostly crafting pieces for family and friends.
About the Author: R. MITCHELL SCOTT, Ronni, is an Air Force veteran and former school and art teacher. She and her husband have three grown children and three grandchildren. She loves to bake and has mastered the art of fudgemaking, assuring her popularity during the holidays. Ronni graduated with honors at both Columbus State University, Georgia and Asbury Theological Seminary, Florida, earning a Bachelor of Science degree specializing in Art, and a Master of Biblical Studies respectively. Ronni loves getting her hands dirty in Georgia’s Lizella Clay.

Author Draws Inspriation from a Her Sons

For immediate release: October is National Bullying Prevention Month. Over 3.2 million students are victims of bullying each year and 17 percent of American students report being bullied at least two times a month according to dosomething.org. Author Laura Taylor hopes her new children’s book, EE Otter and the Bullfrog Bullies (Ambassador International; October 2014; $6.99, paperback) will give kids tools to help them put a stop to bullying the Biblical way.

E.E. OtterStudies from the National Association of School Psychologists show that one in four teachers don’t think bullying is wrong and only intervene 4 percent of the time. “Bullying is a heart issue and so many of the programs that are implemented deal with punitive measures that address the behaviors and don’t address the issues of heart,” says Taylor, a teacher herself. “And while punitive measures need to be in place as a consequence to bullying someone, we need to understand that God’s desire is to change hearts with His love and power.

EE Otter and the Bullfrog Bullies follows a band of loveable animals as they encounter relevant issues that many kids face at school today. When a group of scary bullfrogs threatens them for using the basketball court EE and his pals try to fight back. EE’s grandfather uses the situation as an opportunity to explain how the Bible says we should treat our enemies. He points to Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, citing Scripture as a powerful source of guidance. Using the wise advice, EE is able to show love to the bullies, relying on God’s Word and prayer to help him through a difficult situation.

About the Author: Laura Taylor resides in rural South Carolina. She holds a B.S. degree in Therapeutic Recreation from Houghton College and teaches at Wardlaw Academy. She and her husband are the parents of five amazing and busy boys! They operate a small martial arts school where their passion is ministering the transforming love of Jesus Christ through the medium of martial arts.

Military Spouses Open Up About Fears, Worries and Stress of Military Life

Authors Hope to Help Other Military Spouses Thrive

For immediate release: They’ve gone weeks without talking to their husbands, spent sleepless nights worrying about infidelity and agonized over whether they will see each other again. Marrying someone in the military means you not only marry them; you marry their profession, too. And as authors Kathy Barnett and Carrie Daws learned years after saying “I do,” they must not only love their men, but they must love the calling of those men as well. In The Warrior’s Bride: Biblical Strategies to Help the Military Spouse Thrive, (Ambassador International; October 2014; $15.99, paperback) Barnett and Daws hope to help others find hope and joy in their military marriages.

The Warrior's BrideWhether bearing the frustration of being a single parent while their spouse was deployed or dealing with the stress of yet another move, military spouses handle a unique set of life challenges. “One of the greatest frustrations about being married to a military man is knowing that you cannot plan your own life,” writes Barnett. “Your husband, and thus your marriage, is owned by the United States Government, and you are forced to accept the plans for the greater good over your own.”

The Warrior’s Bride includes funny stories, major failures and plentiful amounts of encouragement for people walking the path of being a military spouse. Daws and Barnett deal with touchy topics like the fear of death, the pain of infidelity and living with a wounded soul. “We are sharing what we have learned,” explains Daws, “and what Christ has taught us.”

About the Authors: Kathy Barnett has been Sam’s Warrior Bride for 24 years. With his recent retirement from the U.S. Army, she eagerly continues to serve Sam as they raise and homeschool their nine children. She and Sam counsel and minister to the needs of military families pointing them to the freedom found in Christ.

God rewrote Carrie Daws’ dreams, including being a stay-at-home mom and writer. Originally writing devotions, the Christian Writer’s Guild cultivated in Carrie a love for writing fiction. Carrie’s husband medically retired from the USAF, and they now live in Virginia with their three children. She stays busy homeschooling and volunteering within military ministries.
