#ThrowbackThursday: A Scent of Water: Bringing Life Back to the Christian School Movement

posted on

As we reminisce on the over forty years that God has blessed Ambassador International to remain in business, we are highlighting a different #backlistbook each week in a series called #ThrowbackThursday.

It’s back-to-school season!

Autumn will be here sooner than later, but this month and some of the next, kiddos all around the world head back to school. Homeschool, public school, Christian school – we are blessed with so many choices for our children.

In this season of back-to-school pictures and smiling faces with fresh backpacks, we wanted to highlight a book that talks about the Christian school movement, its importance, and its struggles.

One of the surprising benefits of the pandemic was that Christian schools in the USA saw record enrollment. The once-lagging education model was given life and energy for a short period of time.

However, more change is still needed.

A Scent of Water details what Christian schools desperately need – strong leadership. In addition to the usual requirements of running a school, Christian schools also need leaders who can fundraise, find vision, and motivate parents to invest in the school.

David Daly is a faithful, born-again Christian from Northern Ireland, currently living in England with his wife, Gay. Officially retired, David spends time sharing his testimony, studying Scripture, and staying active in the community with his wife. David’s mission is to use his story to inspire others and glorify God. His book, One Way to Grace: A Memoir Through Scripture, authored with Dawn Merrow, was published by Ambassador International on August 15, 2007.

Addiction and inner struggle haunted David throughout his life. After losing everything, David repented and turned to Jesus for deliverance and to God’s Holy Word for guidance through the Holy Spirit. An eye-opening visit to Israel became a turning point in David’s life, but ongoing challenges continued to test David’s faith.

One Way to Grace covers the span of David’s life experiences, starting with his birth and childhood spent in the tumultuous civil unrest of Northern Ireland and culminating with his transformation into a devout believer.

Follow along as he discovers how to stand strong with his faith in Jesus that saved his life. David’s testimony demonstrates the loving, healing power of an honest walk with Christ.

#Throwback Thursday: The Sex Spiral

Dustin Daniels is the Senior Pastor of the River Bible Church in Cottonwood, AZ. He is the co-founder of Revive40, a Christ-centered sexual purity ministry that teaches and trains God’s design for sex, marriage, and the family. He is also the host of the podcast, “God, Sex and You,” that is listened to in 80 countries around the world. Dustin and his wife Amy, live in Cottonwood, AZ. Dustin Daniels

Dustin’s book, The Sex Spiral: Forgiven and Free from Pornography, was published by Ambassador International on January 8, 2018. While this book doesn’t fall too far back in our catalogue backlist, we felt this book was appropriate to share during the month of June because Dustin’s book first looks at God’s design for marriage and sexuality.

Every Sunday, in Bible-believing churches across the world, pews are filled with men and women who have been forgiven by the blood of Jesus Christ. However, millions of people walk away from the worship service confused as to why they are not experiencing the freedom that the Scriptures proclaim.

The Sex Spiral Throwback ThursdayThere is a direct correlation between the confusion and apathy of sexuality within our churches and the pandemic of pornography in our pews.

Unfortunately, the statistics are too big to quote and we don’t believe them when we do. How is it possible that so many Christians are addicted to pornography? Isn’t Jesus enough? Why are we still being tempted with lust? What’s wrong? What’s missing?

Sexual sin is powerful and unforgiving—it grows if unaddressed and devours lives. Daniels writes that it was only through his active church community and, most importantly, the forgiveness and grace of Jesus Christ, which broke his spiral of sin and allowed him the freedom that the Scriptures proclaim. Daniels’ book is not a self-help book or a twelve-step program, but rather The Sex Spiral: Forgiven and Free From Pornography is a Biblical plan to experience not only the forgiveness of Jesus Christ, but also the freedom He promises.

#Throwback Thursday: Esther: Reflections From An Unexpected Life by Jennifer Westbrook Spivey

As we reminisce on the over forty years that God has blessed Ambassador International to remain in business, we are highlighting a different #backlistbook each week in a series called #ThrowbackThursday.

This week’s featured book is Esther: Reflections From An Unexpected Life by Jennifer Westbrook Spivey which was published by Ambassador International on March 14, 2008.

Through Queen Esther, the course of history was changed. It is nearly impossible to imagine our world today had Haman been successful in his attempt to wipe out the Jews altogether. Her story is, in the easiest terms and by the most convenient definition, an historical account of how God delivered the Jews from total destruction at the hands of an evil man. However, to describe Esther’s story as a mere historical account does not do justice to this powerful and dramatic life. Esther’s life was, in every way, unexpected. The untrained observer looking at this young Jewish woman may not have thought much of her at all. Certainly there was nothing extraordinary about where she lived, when she lived, how she lived, or even who she was.

In Esther: Reflections From an Unexpected Life, readers will come to know several important people: Esther, the Jewess still living in the city of her captivity, even though the captivity has been over for many years; Mordecai, Esther’s guardian and cousin; Ahasuerus, king of Persia; and Haman, the evil man using his influential position with the king to plot and against the Jews. Readers will also come to know a few others who have smaller roles in this story, but are equally significant: Vashti, the dethroned queen; Memucan, one of Ahasuerus’ many advisors; and Zeresh, Haman’s wife who unwittingly encourages her husband to his own tragic end. Whether good or bad, each of these people have something to teach us in their examples.

This inspirational study is divided into ten weeks, each week divided into five days of “mini lessons.” Each lesson begins with an illustration that introduces the idea of the personal application for the day before getting into the Word. Each lesson may take about ten to twelve minutes, so it can easily be added to your daily quiet time. If you do not currently have a daily quiet time, this little study may serve as a great tool to help you develop that important discipline. Also, after reading through Esther and studying this book, you will see that it is not at all just dry history: it is a powerful and timeless example to what God can do with a person completely submitted to Him, regardless of personal cost.

Esther: Reflections From an Unexpected Life is a thought-provoking must read for all Christian women. For a limited time, you can grab this ebook for .99! Don’t miss out!

#Throwback Thursday: Saint Patrick: The Man & His Mission by John Holmes

As we reminisce on the over forty years that God has blessed Ambassador International to remain in business, we are highlighting a different #backlistbook each week in a series called #ThrowbackThursday.

Saint Patrick: The Man & His Mission by John Holmes was published by Ambassador International in 2013.

Saint Patrick: The Man and His Mission by John HolmesSaint Patrick: The Man & His Mission will take you on a journey back to the early part of the 5th century.

Little information exists regarding life and conditions prior to that time in the land named Hibernia—the island lay on the edge of the known world beyond the fringe of the Roman Empire. It took the mission of the man we call Saint Patrick and the discovery of his writings to see the beginning of any real history of Ireland.

More important still is the fact that these writings provide such a vivid picture of Patrick himself that the force of his personality and the fervor of his faith still live today.

Here then is a voice from the distant past! Not a faltering voice or a melancholy voice but a voice full of certainty and hope and joy. The voice of a man in touch with God.

” . . . it is very welcome to have a book which concentrates on Patrick’s own writings and is so free from all the non-historical lore that has become attached to his career.”—Dr. Marie T. Flanagan, The Queen’s University of Belfast

“From the volumes of history John Holmes has brought Patrick to life in a pleasant easy-to-read book which captures Patrick’s heartbeat and shows us the man who braved numerous dangers to bring the gospel to pagan Ireland. Here too, we have Patrick’s own writings, including his ‘Confession.’ It deserves wide circulation.”—Rev. Dr. Colin N. Peckham, Principal of Faith Mission Bible College, Edinburgh
