Books for Celebrating Easter

posted on

Easter is a great reminder of not only God’s sacrifice for us, but of His powerful love for us. Whether you need a book to stuff inside a little one’s Easter basket, or a title to encourage your child’s walk with God, here are some books that are great for Easter:

Guess How Much God Loves You by Karen Ferguson for Easter basketsKaren Ferguson reminds children of God’s love for them in her book Guess How Much God Loves You. Guess How Much God Loves You is the story of seven-year-old Lucy Lu, a colorful, creatively curious first-grader, who is starting to have serious questions about God.

How old is He? Does He sleep? What does He do all day? And the biggest one of all—does God love me?

After one particularly hard day of being bullied by her classmates at school, Lucy feels like she doesn’t matter. She sits with Papa Joe, who has promised to answer her questions about God, launching them onto a journey to discover God’s never-changing, never-failing, never-ending love.

What follows is a wild adventure through the Bible, where Lucy and her papa find themselves in the middle of each page of the exciting story of God’s love and faithfulness for all people throughout all of history.

I Know the Plans by Jennifer Bosma for Easter basketsIn I Know the Plans, author Jennifer Bosma seeks to show God’s love for us through the perfect plan He has for each and every one of us. It is so important for children to have a firm foundation to build upon. “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path(Psalm 119:105). This children’s book, with its beautiful illustrations, points children to that plan.

God has a plan for each child before they are even created. But in this noisy world, it’s easy for our children to not hear God’s voice and forget who they were created to be.

I Know the Plans presents God’s promises to young children with a fun, engaging rhyme, planting the seeds of Scripture into their hearts to help them grow in their love for Him. With vivid illustrations accompanying each passage, I Know the Plans captures a little one’s attention from start to finish and should be the first book in every child’s library.

The Easter Donkey for Easter basketsThe Easter Donkey brings the story of Easter into the modern day through a donkey named Drupelet, who gets chosen to play a role in a reenactment of Palm Sunday.  This heartwarming tale introduces the topics of Jesus’ Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem, the heaviness of Maundy Thursday, the sorrow of Good Friday, and the joy of Easter Sunday without weighing down the story or character with too much information, making it the perfect addition to your Easter basket. Author Donna Thornton wrote this sweet book not only to offer a fresh telling of the Easter story but also to remind everyone of its wonder.

#Throwback Thursday: The Wild-Bird Child by Derick Bingham

posted on

As we reminisce on the over forty years that God has blessed Ambassador International to remain in business, we are highlighting a different #backlistbook each week in a series called #ThrowbackThursday.

Today we’re highlighting the book The Wild-Bird Child: A Life of Amy Carmichael by Derick Bingham, first published by Ambassador International in 2004, and re-released with a new cover in 2019.

Amy, a Christian missionary, social reformer and writer of thirty-five books, once described herself as a ‘Wild-bird child and in no wise tame’: her life proved her observation to be hauntingly accurate.Amy Carmichael

For this biography, the first by anyone from her home County, Derick Bingham carefully researched Amy Carmichael’s original letters now placed by the Dohnavur Fellowship and Miss Margaret Wilkinson in the Northern Ireland Public Records Office.

During the time of the Raj in India, Amy Carmichael discovered a custom of the time in which children were ‘married to gods’ and so introduced to a life of prostitution. With a mixture of courage and heartbreak, she began to uncover the facts, sometimes under disguise, for the government. After independence, the Indian government courageously prohibited the practice by law. Against difficult circumstances, Amy and her colleagues provided a safe home for these children against awesomely difficult circumstances at Dohnavur in South India.

Until her death in 1951, she devoted fifty years of her life to rescuing babies and children from dangerous backgrounds in India.

As Bingham tried to uncover the heart and conscience of this extraordinarily self-effacing legend, he is on record as saying that it proved to be one of the greatest spiritual experiences of his life, and in this biography, readers will find spiritual gold. She was brilliant, personable and passionate, and she is arguably the most gifted of all Irish woman writers of Christian literature.

1. Clear Confusion by Kathy Howard

What am I going to do, God? Who am I?

Charlotte Hallaway needs to come to terms with her father’s death. He had been her only family, and she wasn’t handling her grief well. It was just supposed to be a few weeks of peace and quiet to process it all, but then she saw them-a drug deal and a murder within seconds of each other.

And they saw her.

Now running for her life, Charlotte boards a bus to escape her pursuers and wakes up the next morning in the woods of Jennings, Georgia, without a memory of how she got there or of who she is. All she knows is an underlying fear she can’t seem to shake.

When two hunters find her battered and scared, can she put aside the clear confusion she’s experiencing to trust them? She wants to trust them, especially Nicholas, but fear is holding her back. Trust is incredibly hard when one is so clearly confused. Could it be he and his friend are not who they claim to be?

Who are they really . . . and who is she?

As Morane’s fury is unleashed, time is running out for Lester, and Draven’s fate is in the hands of a man whose faith is being pushed to the limit.

A Sanctuary in Our Midst: Christmas Reflections on Jesus by Karen L. Straszheim

Available November 12, 2019

A Sanctuary in Our MidstAmidst the checklists and social engagements for the Christmas season, Karen Straszheim writes for the weary Christian who gets lost in the holiday madness.

By placing a strong emphasis on spiritual rest, Straszheim’s Christmas devotional is divided into eleven chapters that collectively call for the Christian to put their shopping bags down and just rest in the Scriptures. A Sanctuary in Our Midst: Christmas Reflections on Jesus is deeply enriched with Scripture references throughout to exemplify how the Old and New Testament compliment each other, and how we can understand the Bible.

A Sanctuary in Our Midst is perfect for studying in a group or individually: the discussion questions could be talked about all together over hot cocoa or be used to quietly reflect on in one’s own time. Either way, this devotional is a sanctuary in and of itself.

Day 1

All Matty the manger mouse wants to do is snuggle into the warmth of his mother and fall asleep—but the Creator of the world has another plan for him…

What really happened the night Jesus was born?
Matty’s mother tells him he will take part in the most important thing ever to happen in history. Why him, a meek and lowly stable mouse? All Matty the manger mouse wants to do is snuggle into the warmth of his mother and fall asleep but the Creator of the world has another plan for him. Will the little stable mouse surrender to his own needs or bow to the will of the Savior?
Children and adults will be touched by Matty’s brave little heart. As the story of that first Christmas unfolds, come join Matty and all the other stable dwellers portrayed in lush and charming pastel illustrations.

Learn more about Sarah Martin Byrd and The Manger Mouse HERE.

Day 2

A delightful retelling of the Christmas Story, told through the eyes of Druplet, a common donkey.

Drupelet, a young donkey named after a juice bump on a raspberry, lived on a raspberry farm and his wish was to one day be as special as the prize horses in a nearby pasture. As Christmas rolled around, Drupelet went on an adventure that saw him standing next to a baby in a manger and a young girl in funny clothes. On returning to the farm Drupelet inquired what this was all about, this is when the wise barn cat shared the story of Christmas. Drupelet now felt special.

Day 3

Preparing for the journey to Bethlehem in order to register for the census, Joseph groomed the gentle donkey colt chosen to accompany him and his bride…This is his little tale.

Preparing for the journey to Bethlehem in order to register for the census, Joseph groomed the gentle donkey colt chosen to accompany him and his bride, who was with child. Along the way, the charming little beast of burden committed to memory all he saw and heard along the way in hopes that his intuitive insights and attention to detail would be passed down for generations to come. Little did he realize he would be a witness to the birth of the Christ Child, never dreaming he would be pressed into the service of a King. Thus, the little chronicler fills in many gaps in the love story of Joseph and Mary, and the joyous birth of Jesus. This is his little tale.

Till The Storm Passes ByNeed some inspiration about what to read right now? Here are some suggestions from our staff members:

Deana Browning, Office Manager:  As a lifelong Alaskan and recent transplant to South Carolina I was delighted to read the first book in our Alaskan Waters Series by AnnaLee Conti, Till the Storm Passes By.  A wonderful journey that weaves its way through the majestic beauty of the Alaskan frontier while captivating you with its characters.  Truly a book you don’t want to put down.

Tim Lowry, COO: I’m very excited to read the second edition of Reckless Abandon by David Sitton. In this book David makes a very bold and clear statement that you need to be ready to die for Christ, He is worth it! I think this is something we don’t like to think about here in America while in many other countries christians are risking their lives daily to further the gospel.

Brenda Covert, Editor: Azure Maris —not your typical mermaid tale! How big is your God? This work of fiction will challenge your thinking. It Help! Someone I Love is Depressedhooked me and reeled me in from the first page. Fascinating characters, settings, situations, and conflict abound, with contemporary church issues and an outsider’s view of the typical worship service thrown in for good measure. I can’t wait for the next book!

Anna Riebe, Digital Producer: The book I chose is Help, Someone I love is Depressed.  I found myself reading this book while turning it into an ebook and I am really looking forward to reading it in its entirety. Greg Russ writes in a way that is entertaining and easy to follow and the book is full of useful and helpful information pertaining to depression – a problem that many people struggle with.

Alison Storm, publicist: I highly recommend Paul Davis’ authorized biography, George Beverly Shea: Tell Me the Story. It was inspiring to read about how Bev Shea went from being a shy insurance salesman to singing on stages around the world with the Billy Graham evangelistic team.

Matt Mulder, Creative Director: Try to read Healing Hearts with dry eyes. Pediatric heart surgeon Hisashi Nikaidoh, MD relates his grief after losing his own son in a tragic accident. Through his work, he met eight amazing mothers who share their individual stories of losing a child.

5 Tips for Daily Living as a Christian

posted on

Living as a Christian is not a simple decision. It’s a constant daily choice that transitions your heart into something more, something that fulfills God’s purpose for you and all of your heart’s desires. Our busy lives are a constant swarm of technology, media, and information that continually test our religious boundaries. At every turn, we are challenged with the latest test. So where do we get our daily motivation to continue to pursue a God-focused life and let Him live in our hearts? Here is a great starter list to begin a daily routine to keep God in your daily life and simultaneously grow closer with him.

  1. Give Him a Few Minutes Every Day. Whether or not it’s during your drive to work with a quick prayer behind the steering wheel, or sitting down in a quiet place and contemplating God’s goodness in your life, give Him time every day. Reflect on the positive things going on in your life, your gratefulness for good health, children, or simply enjoying your dog wagging his tail. Take a minute to appreciate the smaller and more important parts of life and not the stress that typically steals all of our attention.
  2. Read a Devotional. Regardless if this is for you or within a group, stay busy reading. Find a book that speaks to your heart and gives guidance to any area of your life. Are you struggling with forgiveness? (Forgiveness Is Not An Option: A Journey to Freedom and Healing) Do you crave peace and to let go of anxiety? (How to Have a Quiet Heart) Are you curious who God is? (For His Name’s Sake). Struggling with changing the way you think and thinking more positively? (Change the Way You Think: Winning the Everyday Battles of the Mind) Struggling with being single? (Single & Content: A Journey from Despair to Delight) Are you feeling alone or forgotten? (What If)
  3. Keep a Journal. Write down your feelings, emotional, and journey through whatever your heart is going through. Writing can be a great therapeutic release for emotions that we hold in. Answer questions from the devotional and meditate on your own journey through God’s word.
  4. Memorize Verses. The Bible is full of stories of real people who experienced similar heartache as you. Can’t handle something going on in your life? David or Mordecai. Sickness or difficulty? The numerous stories of those Jesus healed. One of my favorite pins on Pinterest is a list of scriptures that are directly related particular pains. Stressed? (Ephesians 4:27)Worried? (Philippians 4:6) Depressed? (Hosea 6:1)
  5. Keep an Accountability Partner. God doesn’t intend for us to experience pain by ourselves. Whether we need guidance and direction or simply a shoulder to cry on, find a close friend who you can trust during your journey. Share your struggle, helpful scripture, positive ideas that will help both of you. Keep each other accountable for reading scripture, devotionals, or simply spending time with God every day.
